Thomas Sackville, fifth earl of Dorset

Epigram on the Earl of Dorsett, who died suddenly at the Council-Board :

Uncivil Death ! That would'st not once conferre,

Dispute, or parle with our treasurer,

Had he been thee, or of you fatall tribe,

He would have spared you life, and ta'ne a bribe.

He that so often had, with gold and witt,

Injured strong law, and almost conquered it,

At length, for want of evidence to show,

Was forced himself to take a deadly blow.
